Lung Health, Genetics & Environmental Factors

Environmental & Lifestyle Factors Affect Lung Health by Triggering Genetic Weaknesses

Island Healthworks Discusses the importance of the lungs in providing oxygen, & genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors in lung health

Trees are the lungs of the Earth, while our lungs link us to our atmosphere, in turn being affected by atmospheric conditions.

Sensitive yet hardworking, your lungs are the organs by which you receive access to the most immediately critical source of sustenance – a steady supply of fresh air.

The importance of your lungs stands out after a moment’s reflection. Without food, survival is measured in weeks, without water, in days, but without air, seconds or minutes. We are generally aware of these acute concerns, but less familiar with the chronic impacts of poor pulmonary function on our overall health. Due to the interconnected nature of our body, lung health and air supply is intimately connected to the health of multiple body systems. Fortunately, much control over lung health can be gained through factors ranging from diet to your personal breathing style.

If your lungs are not functioning well, you are not getting enough oxygen delivered to your cells, tissues, organs and glands. Oxygen is essential as a component of healthy blood flow as it performs the vital functions of nutrient delivery and detoxification. Many causes are involved in the rising rates of lung health complaints we are seeing worldwide. Infection, cancer, emphysema, tissue inflammation, asthma and many related lung conditions all contribute to concerns for both the lungs and the rest of the body. Lung health and heart health is closely linked, meaning that taking care of the lungs reduces stress on the heart and vice versa.

As previously mentioned in our story on lung health basics, genetics may lie at the root of numerous lung conditions. Asthma, allergies, and a predisposition to pulmonary inflammation along with several lesser known lung diseases may have genetic roots. However, genetic weaknesses do not necessarily mean you are destined to experience these problems. In many cases there is only a potential weakness that may be brought out through variables including environmental stressors, physical and psychological stress plus diet and lifestyle choices that lead to nutrient deficiencies or toxic exposures. Inflammation lies at the root of all disease and lung health is no exception.

By taking an integrative view of your health and making the right choices, a wise investment in the health of the lungs can be made for the benefit of your entire body. Yvonne at Island Healthworks has noticed lung health improvements after certain concerns detected in an iridology consultations have been addressed. Among the many lung conditions seen today, asthma, allergies, bronchitis and other common conditions as well as rarer complications are linked to diverse aspects of health and body system strength.

Human health and natural resources are closely linked.  As living beings well adapted to life on this planet, we have come to depend on sunlight, nutrients, fresh air and quality food with a proper nutrient balance. We are also adapted in a way that allows the use of natural herbs to support our health.

While food plants form an essential source of nutrients and life supporting natural compounds ranging from enzymes and minerals to chlorophyll and fiber, more concentrated nutrients, biologically active plant components and ingredients from herbs have exceptionally valuable applications. Herbs may deliver nutrients in a concentrated form, or catalyze beneficial processes and support human health through specific actions linked to their botanical makeup.

Given the importance of herbal health care considerations, Island Healthworks will take the opportunity to give you a proper snapshot of how herbs work and why it is so important to ensure they are used correctly. A herb is not just a herb, there are key factors that lead to potential benefits instead of a wasted opportunity if considered.

Herbs come from a diversity of plant types, including those familiar from gardens, forests and fields, species used in cooking, and lesser known wild crafted specialty herbs. Roots, leaves, stems, berries and juices are all among the plant parts may serve as the sources of herbal formulations. Originating from all over the world, herbal formulations have been central to traditional health care methods in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, South America and Australia, covering temperate and tropical environments alike. Each plant offers a specific biochemical makeup and set of properties. First Nations uses of herbs are paralleled in many modern formulations.

Pollen, Hay Fever & Natural Histamine Control

High Pollen Counts Trigger Inflammation in Sensitive Individuals

Island Healthworks Discusses pollen Allergies, Causes & Mitigation - Grasses are a common trigger

Grasses and other Elements of Nature Are Common Allergens due to Pollen Release

Nature is essential for human health, yet pollen allergies present a growing challenge. In this spring feature article, Island Healthworks profiles the science behind pollen reactions in this feature article, implications of pollen reactions for general health. You can then discover our tips for addressing these factors in your life!

While your body is fortunately programmed to defend itself against foreign invaders, oversensitization of the immune system leads to a wide range of harmful impacts when ordinary matter is targeted. The results include significant levels of inflammation throughout the body tissues and organ systems.

The causes of allergies remain the subject of important further research, there is evidence that toxicity and excessive immune system reactivity through antibody formation play a key role in allergic processes. Addressing allergies can take three different paths. First of all, addressing potential allergic root causes is important, whether the root of an allergic response is linked to an overly sensitive immune system due to antibody interactions, or due to sensitization and increased body toxicity levels that impair immunity.

Humans are part of nature and we exert a profound influence on the natural world. While much concern has focused on human impacts on forests, bird populations, water quality, air quality and endangered species, we ourselves are endangered in a different way. Without the proper access to nature that comes hand in hand with proper respect for nature, we face a variety of health challenges relating to a loss of benefits from the natural world.

Bone, Joint & Muscle Health Explained!

Healthy Bones & Joints Call for Fitness, Nutrition & Hormonal Balance

Island Healthworks features the true facts about bone health, muscles, tendons and nutrition

In order to support the body, the musculoskeletal system requires proper nutritional support

Form and function are interconnected. The adult human body structure is built out 206 bones and countless muscles, ligaments and tendons that support our shape and form joints to enable all our activities.

Supporting the body, the bones depend on proper nutrition for health and resilience. The bones also juxtapose with our connective tissues, muscles,  and cartilage to form joints,  which are areas of special strength and vulnerability in day to day life. Working together, the components of our musculoskeletal system support the physical framework of our body yet they depend on the biochemical support of multiple body systems. The health of our entire musculoskeletal system is influenced by nutrition, genetics, environmental factors, and injury related considerations. Bones require minerals and biochemical nourishment, joint require proper nutrient assimilation, collagen and macronutrients, and muscles depend on protein among the many factors in the health of these body components.

There are many factors that your daily choices can influence when it comes to the health of your body’s essential supporting and moving framework.  According to research published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, rising rates of osteoporosis stemming from multiple factors point to an urgent need to develop nutritional strategies that may relate to concerns affecting bone health. The bones are living and dynamic systems linked to many aspects of your body systems. While calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin D are essential for proper bone health, there is a bigger picture at work in how these solid, apparently static framework pieces are living, breathing parts of your body that tie in with dynamic biochemical processes

The Gut Brain Connection & Digestion Explained

Digestion and gut health affect brain function through nutrient distribution and toxic metabolism

Special feature with scientific article links! Learn how the gut and brain are interconnected through nerves, friendly bacteria, digestion, nutrition and waste metabolism!

Digestive Health affects brain function - Island Healthworks

Digestion offers a prime example of how our body systems interconnect

The human body is made up of cells, tissues, organs, and glands that work together in harmony to carry out a vast range of essential functions. Our interconnected functions illustrate the foremost importance of an integrative view and approach to health.

The digestive system processes food into two necessary components, one vital for our health and the other requiring effective elimination. These are nutrients, and waste. Optimal digestive function first and foremost extracts as many nutrients as possible from our food. Optimal digestive function then prepares waste for elimination and then removes the waste. Finally, optimal digestion depends on both the health of the Digestive System, and what is put into this magnificent system. We must keep in mind the level of interconnection between the digestive system and other body systems.

Cardiovascular Health Depends upon Endothelial Cell Condition!

Cardiovascular disease is prevalent. Learn why endothelial cell health is critical!

Island Healthworks features this fascinating video discussing Dr. Esselstyn’s findings on the effects of a Western diet on endothelial cell survival! Findings are examined in relation to general cardiovascular health!

Cardiovascular disorders are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in North America. Health research indicates a variety of factors may be involved, many of them potentially addressable through the right lifestyle and health care choices.

In this special feature post, Island Healthworks gives you an inside view of the cellular biology behind many cardiovascular symptoms to equip you with the cutting edge knowledge you need to better protect yourself!

The truth about the health of your cardiovascular system takes a suprising turn when the link between endothelial cells in the circulatory system, nitric oxide and a standard western diet are considered.  In 1985, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn conducted whole foods, plant based diet studies with 24 participants. 6 participants dropped out, leaving 18, but of those 18, 11 showed halted progression of heart disease after angiograms, while 4 displayed evidence pointing to a reversal of the disorder.

Endothelial cells line the inside of the vast, sensitive cardiovascular system. If laid out, the endothelial cells in a healthy person would cover 6 to 8 tennis courts! Endothelial cells are critical to your cardiovascular health on a physiological and biochemical level. Identified in 1978 as producers of nitric oxide, these specialized cells release significant quantities of this gas that is often overlooked in its core importance next to oxygen.

Allergies & Year Round Colds & Flus Demystified

Allergy Season Symptoms & Year Round Cold and Flu Occurrences Relate to Immunity

Learn about allergies, colds and flus with Island Healthworks

Pollen triggers allergies when your body overreacts

Natural resistance to allergies, colds and flus alike all depend on the condition of our immune system. Immune system health involves a combination of body systems that must function together to defend the body, and avoid overreacting to environmental elements.

In the spring, airborne allergens are hard to avoid, and the allergic load from these natural allergens may be worsened by unnatural levels of toxins in our environment. Varnishes, paints and even packaging materials may contribute to toxicity and allergic burdens in our home and office environment. There are many other factors to consider. Pet allergies may be mitigated by avoiding particularly allergenic species, and by avoidance of overly close contact. However, at Island Healthworks we have seen pet allergies disappear through simple lifestyle changes and the right nutritional supplementation.

If there are innate, unavoidable sources of allergens in our environment, such as pollen, we can take steps to compensate for your immune system overreaction. Even in an allergen free environment, a lack of symptoms from allergies should not mean one should be satisfied with one’s current health. The seasonal appearance of allergies may indicate chronic health impairments that manifest themselves as allergies. Continue reading
