Humans evolved to eat whole foods. Attempted reliance upon refined foods robs us of essential fiber and nutrients in our diet, while taking up space in our bodies and wasting valuable digestive resources. Whole foods, in contrast provide valuable fibre that assists in their digestion, while being equipped with vitamin, mineral and essential fatty acid bearing components that ensure they are not just taking up space in our body, but giving us the nutrition we require.

Roughage is needed to maintain momentum in our gastrointestinal tract. Some of the most popular processed foods are challenging for the digestive system to eliminate and may clog our digestive tract, slowing down digestion due to a lack of roughage. Then, the food may decompose due to the length of time taken to pass through our intestines. This same clogging effect may occur with any food when we lack adequate fiber intake in our regular diet. Furthermore, many processed foods have been stripped of essential nutrients through refinement and simply take space without providing the nutrients that whole foods contain.

A healthy blood stream makes for a healthy body. Our blood nourishes our cells, all tissues, organs and glands. Clearly, just having enough blood is not enough. It must be in great shape if you want to be healthy! Live Blood Cell Analysis at Island Healthworks gives us a window into the person’s nutritional needs, helping us to design a program and healthy lifestyle plan. A live blood sample gives valuable insight into the attributes of the blood terrain.

In the Live Blood Cell Analysis process, we use our state of the art microscopy equipment to conduct both a wet and dry blood cell analysis. To obtain the samples, we simply take a pinprick blood sample from your finger and place the drop of blood on a slide, and then place 8 separate drops on another slide to dry. Using a specially designed compound microscope, we magnify and project the image of the wet blood sample and the dry blood sample onto a computer screen, where we view the specific characteristics of the sample.

With the bloodstream underpinning every function of our body, a microscopy examined sample of the blood itself offers an invaluable look at our current lifestyle and nutritional needs. The health of your blood is central to the health of your cardiovascular system, but also relates directly to all other aspects of your health. When anomalies are noticed in a live blood sample, the observations give us relevant information to build a nutritional program tailored to the needs reflected in the blood terrain. The findings help to support improved health and lifestyle decision making.

Healthy Fats and Your Health

Just Like Low Blood Sugar, Low Healthy Fat Levels Do Harm

Avocado Oil, along with Coconut oil are examples of naturally healthy, nutritious fat choices for an improved diet

Avocado Oil properly prepared is one vibrant source of Healthy Fat based nutrition

We may worry about getting fat, but what if the bigger problem is actually a deficiency in dietary intake of healthy fat? Cutting down on fat from our diet may be a knee-jerk response to weight gain, yet, what if we are actually starving ourselves through a lack of proper fat intake while making ourselves sick with a diet full of trans-fats and other unnatural forms of fat? Bad fats include such surprising sources as starchy carbs. Every time you eat a meal devoid of healthy fat, you are getting full, but not getting the nourishment you need to survive and thrive! And healthy fat deficiencies can make you feel sick and irritable just like low blood sugar.

In her more than 30 years of practice and research, Yvonne Dollard Perc of Island Healthworks has seen firsthand the effects of improper fat intake and researched the subject in great depth. Yvonne stresses that fats come in two forms, healthy, non-adulterated fat, and harmful forms of fat, including the starchy carbs and infamous trans-fatty acids, alien to the human body and capable of causing biochemical disruption. If we take in the wrong forms of fat, the physical structures of our body may be malnourished, while toxic effects from the wrong fats can weaken our tissues and cells. Starchy carbs turn to a sticky fat which clogs the arteries, setting the stage for trans-fats to stick and bind to the walls of these blood vessels. Healthy eating is thus never as simple as saying “cut out too much fat” it is about finding the right fats and actively including them in our diet. The wrong fats can be overly acid; the right fats build our health by supporting a proper PH balance.

Secrets of Biological Beauty Building

Unexpected Nutrition Tips for Naturally Superior Beauty

The skin is our largest organ, known as the integumentary system. Here described by Island Healthworks, Yvonne Dollard Perc

Beauty is both a hot topic in the modern world and a concern of human beings since ancient times. However, beauty is not only an aesthetic concern; it is important to our self image and also, a strong indicator of our physical health, mental well being and biochemical condition. Beauty is not superficial, and neither should our approach to beauty be anything less than serious and biologically correct.

It is no surprise that truly natural approaches to beauty which nutrify the body are revolutionary. With respect to skin health, nourishing the body from within with natural chemical compounds arising from nutritional extracts and precise dietary components, rather than slathering artificial compounds on our skin are key. And this approach is not biologically correct. The saying “Beauty is only skin deep” is a grand lie, biologically speaking, but we act like it is true when it comes to cosmetic focused health care.

Acidity & Alkalinity Explained – For Human Health

Acidity & Alkalinity Can Determine the Condition of the Human Body

Acidity and alkalinity must be balanced for proper health - acid rain harms forests, and excesss body acidity harms health

Acid rain is bad for the planet; excessive acidity is most harmful to the body.

The human body depends on a proper biochemical balance for health. Key to our health is a balance between body acidity and alkalinity. Acidity and alkalinity has a profound impact on physical health. Many different kinds of acids influence the body, being produced as waste and existing as essential nutrients and digestive juices.

Hot Weather Health – Nutrition & Lifestyle Tips

Summer Conditions Affect Your Body. Handle Hot Weather Right to Maintain Health!

Vancouver Island natural health care provider Island Healthworks shares nutrition, lifestyle and wellness tips for summer

Nutritional support and ample hydration equips your body to handle summer heat. With Island Healthworks, Vancouver Island, BC

Health does not just depend on internal functioning and food intake. Our interaction with the changing environment in which we live profoundly affects our wellbeing. As Vancouver Island, BC based natural health care providers we frequently run into interesting and concerning ways the environment influences our health.

Throughout the seasons, our bodies must adapt to changing conditions that test our response to different types of stresses. There are two fundamental elements of natural health care and healthy living that we must consider in relation to our surrounding environment.

First, we must know which conditions are beneficial and which are likely to unduly stress us. Hot weather is especially challenging.

Second, we must take advantage of the most up to date knowledge on how to support our bodies with the right nutrition, proper exercise and lifestyle adjustments able to better prepare us for each challenge!

By maintaining our health and keeping ourselves in peak condition, we are more resilient when faced with environmental stress such as hot weather! By avoiding unnecessary stress from excess exposure to direct sunlight in hot weather or pollution, we increase our capacity for health and longevity. As summer heat increases our susceptibility to sunburn, whether in the mild Vancouver Island climate where we are located or elsewhere worldwide, our need for increased water intake to keep us hydrated, cool and able to gain nutritional delivery to each cell becomes especially important.

Ketosis: Weight Loss Through Metabolic Recovery

Ketosis Involves Switching from Carb Burning to Fat Burning for Better Health!

Island Healthworks discusses the weight loss benefits associated with ketosis, plus key nutritional & lifesytle considerations.

Ketosis enhancing diets contain protein, healthy fats, vegetables, nuts, seeds and low carbs to encourage the body to run on ketones, not simple carbs.

You are not just what you eat – what you eat affects how your body processes energy. How you process energy profoundly affects your physical condition. Healthy cells and organs, weight loss and vital energy are all defined by the state of your metabolism.

Most of us have adapted in a sort of personal evolutionary process to become dependent, read ‘hooked’ on carbs. As a result, we accumulate fat while relying on carbs, driving both weight gain, unstable blood sugar levels read ‘highs and lows’ in both mood and energy, and even stress on the nervous system and the creation of mental health pressures.

To improve your overall health, you can try a diet that raises ketone levels in your body and reduces carbohydrates  such as potatos, white rice, bread, buns, cookies, refined sugar and other simple carbohydrates. This approach causes the body to burn fat as your fuel instead of glucose for your energy source.  Island Healthworks recommends 70% fats and proteins, plus 20% mixed vegetables, and finally, 5% fruit, 5% carbs, since these last two items are so high in sugar. Fats should consist of non trans-fat, clean fats such as coconut oil, avocado, olive oil, olives and organic butter. Proteins intake should be comprised of nuts, seeds, beans and peas, eggs, fish, especially wild salmon and poultry. Carbs can consist of healthy foods such as organic potatos, quinoa, rice and millet in moderation.

Keep in mind that you should try to find organic products to the extent possible for your diet.

In a state of ketosis, the body burns fatty acids instead of carbs to create ketones as a replacement fuel for the liver glycogen stores that are being depleted. Deriving the name from the old German word Aketon, meaning acetone, ketones are organic compounds containing carbon and oxygen molecule groups. Their presence indicates alternative source of fuel is being utilized as a switch is flipped to enable a pure “fat burning for fuel mode” as discussed by health author and diet expert Kevin Geary.

Island Healthworks discusses the benefits of ketosis as a way to support weight loss, increase energy and stabilize blood sugar levels. Increased performance when exercising is a potential benefit of ketosis.

Ketosis increases energy & performance while supporting weight loss. The right protein shakes are an appropriate performance food compatible with a shift toward ketosis.

Running on ketones through the burning of fat, the body is able to operate both physical and mentally without relying on addictive, blood sugar destabilizing carbs and depending on glucose to such a detrimental extent.

There are three primary factors to consider when transforming your metabolic processes through ketosis.

Nutrition & Detox Supports Balanced Biochemistry

Biochemistry Determines Cellular Health. Learn more about Nutrition & Detox with Island Healthworks!

Island Healthworks features biochemical roots of health at cellular, tissue & organ levels. Learn the basics of nutrition & detoxification.
Proper organ function starts at the cellular level. Macronutrients & micronutrients from a healthy diet must be available to each cell.

What does biochemistry mean for wellness?

Biochemistry is a big part of integrative health care! Our bodies are made up of water, minerals and many organic compounds that form our cells, tisues and organs while controlling the function of our body systems. Keeping our body’s chemistry in balance by limiting exposure to toxins and ensuring nutrient availability and absorption is essential. This is also achievable to a greater degree than we might expect.

The biochemistry of the human body is based upon the activity of countless chemicals including amino acids, proteins, catalyzing agents such as enzymes, sugars, ketones, major nutrient minerals, trace elements and vitamins. Core biochemical processes in the human body affect all of our organ systems and body fluids, affecting everything from skin health, energy levels and blood sugar levels to cardiovascular health and brain function. An imbalance in any nutrient level or a toxic exposure can cause a chain reaction that affects multiple body systems.

Integrative health care looks closely at biochemical imbalances, interruptions in metabolic processes, deficiencies, and toxicity in the human body in the interests of improving our health. Understanding several essential factors at even a layman’s level offers us a significant advantage in making proactive health care choices. Island Healthworks now features 6 key principles of environmental and dietary health and wellness in light of nutrition, detox and biochemical function.
