Coronary Artery Disease - Every Thing You Need To Know
Coronary artery disease is one of the significant conditions under the umbrella of heart diseases. The annual fatality rate of general heart diseases in the US alone is approximately 610,000 people. The figure translates to one heart disease fatality in every four deaths annually.
Coronary artery disease or CAD, as it is mostly known, has a high prevalence rate among other heart diseases in the US. The fatality rate of coronary artery disease in the US is approximately 370,000 people annually. To lower such a stunning figure, everyone should be a key player in keeping healthy.
Plaque buildup, which is medically known as atherosclerosis, can damage your arteries. The function of coronary arteries is to supply the heart muscles with oxygenated blood. Excessive cholesterol buildup forms a plaque in the inner walls of your arteries.
Over time, the deposits can narrow your arteries and hence reduce oxygenate blood to the heart. Such a condition can cause coronary artery disease (CAD), which can then cause angina or chest pain. In the worst condition, it can cause a heart attack.
Severe CAD can weaken your heart muscles due to inadequate blood and oxygen supply to the heart. When that happens, it can lead to other heart diseases such as arrhythmias and heart failure.
What Causes Coronary Artery Disease?
Coronary artery disease can begin from childhood due to artery formation defects. The condition gradually deteriorates, causing damage to the inside layer of the artery.
Another cause of coronary artery disease is plaque buildup inside the walls of coronary arteries. Cholesterol and other substances deposit buildup plaque inside the coronary arteries.
What is the Danger and Complications of Atherosclerosis?
As the deposits continue to build plaque, the arteries gradually continue to narrow. The buildup can cause arteries to block partially. Insufficient blood to the heart can lead to a condition known as angina. Angina is a significant CAD symptom.
Severe plaque buildup can cause total blockage cutting blood flow to the heart, which then can lead to heart attack and probably death.
In other instances, coronary arteries disease can weaken the heart muscles. Heart muscles are responsible for pumping blood. When the muscles weaken, the heart then fails to pump blood efficiently. The weak heart muscles can cause other complications, such as arrhythmia or heart failure.
